About this rental
Step inside an authentic William Mellenthin "Birdhouse Ranch," one of only ~3,000 designed by the prolific mid-century architect, thoughtfully refreshed by owners who understood exactly what they had. From the iconic dovecote perched atop the roofline to the checkerboard vinyl floors that could have been laid in 1953, every design choice inside this Sherman Oaks home reads like an editorial spread. The kitchen retains its original cabinetry and character, refreshed with a crisp paint - a genuine mid-century kitchen ready to cook in. The bathrooms blend original tile with carefully sourced new tile that matches so seamlessly you cannot tell where preservation ends and restoration begins. Character wallpaper accents throughout add warmth, personality, and a sense that someone with taste lives here. The floor plan flows generously - three bedrooms, two baths, plus a warm wood-paneled den with fireplace (perfect as a fourth bedroom or office) and a flexible bonus room with direct garage access. The living room's floor-to-ceiling picture window frames a private backyard where a sparkling pool, mature lemon and orange trees, and a grassy lawn create the archetypal Southern California entertaining space. Fresh exterior paint. Dual-pane windows. Updated electrical. Newer pool pump. Main waste line replaced in 2012. The bones are sound; the styling is inspired. Located blocks from Ventura Boulevard, Whole Foods, Ralphs, and Sherman Oaks' best dining and shopping with easy access to the 101 and 405 this is the rare Mellenthin where the design work is already done. Homes like this are not renovated. They are stewarded.
